The Limbic System & Tattoo Therapy

The limbic system (emotional brain) is the part of the brain that's responsible for behavioural and emotional responses. It also plays a crucial role in the formation and consolidation of memories. The limbic system learns through making associative connections between stimuli and responses. To change its patterns, we have to create experiences, associations and stimulationson the non-verbal, experiential language of the emotional brain. Tattoo Therapy does this by combining the experience of the needle etching ink into your skin,  with the intention we set together (association), in an environment that stimulates the senses for relaxation and release. We make an initially neutral stimulus (designing, tattooing, aromatherapy) become associated with a particular outcome, (growth, healing, transformation, closure to trauma, or release of anxiety)

A modern approach

When you experience pain, such as the pain from being tattooed, your body responds in several ways. One of the immediate responses is the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers produced by the brain. Endorphins are part of the body's way of managing pain and stress.

From a psychological standpoint, the act of choosing to undergo pain in a controlled, meaningful context (such as getting a tattoo that has personal significance) can be empowering. It can serve as a form of reclaiming one's body or as a ritual to mark significant life events or transitions, including healing from past trauma.
